Resumption of Al Dur IWPP Project
Al Dur Independent Water & Power project resumes after suspension.
In November 2008 NPS's client Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) announced that the developer of the project Al Dur IWPP in Bahrain had to suspend issuing the final notice to proceed due to the global financial crisis.
After some pending months of uncertainty, HHI was entitled by its client to proceed with the main parts of the project including the NPS scope of supply. NPS was invited for a “second” kick off meeting, held at the end of February in HHI's offices in Ulsan, Korea, discussing details of how to resume the project's work.
The plant is set to produce up to 600 MW of electricity and 48 million gallons of desalinated water a day by 2010. Capacity will be raised to as much as 1,200 MW by the summer of 2011, according to the documents, which were released by the Bahraini finance ministry.
Within HHI's scope of providing a turn-key HRSG plant section, NPS is covering the technical and associated requirements for designing and furnishing four (4) sets of exhaust gas diverter systems including the complete auxiliaries and sub-systems. The diverter/guillotine systems will be installed downstream GE 9FA gas turbines, comprising design conditions of 663 °C and 75 mbar. The newly agreed delivery date for the NPS scope will be September 2009.
The current project is the second large project with HHI after a many years of abstinence. The first project comprised three sets of diverter/guillotine dampers for the Shuaiba-North site in Kuwait. The NPS scope was successfully delivered at the end of year 2008. During the ongoing erection and commissioning phase, NPS is providing qualified support and site services, which was welcome by the site team.
The performance of the NPS Shuaiba project team was very much appreciated by HHI and the good working relationship with HHI will be continued for the Al Dur project.
